Ignorace & Oedipus

Ignorace and child abuse go hand in hand. Child abuse is a problem that has been going on for centuries, though now it is more enforced that parents treat their children under the guidelines of a healthy home, many cases go haywire. The choice to not enlighten oneself can be the life or death of one of these children. Child abuse is often a subject that makes people uncomfortable to talk about. Many people in today's society choose to not pay attention to things that do not directly effect their everyday lives. Little do they know that child abuse can be happening all around them without any signs. There are many different types of child abuse "Neglect 62.8%, Physical abuse 16.6%, Sexual abuse 9.3%, Emotional/psychological abuse 7.1%, Medical neglect 2.0%, and other 14.3%... The ‘Other’ category listed above includes abandonment, threats to harm the child, congenital drug addiction and other situations that are not counted as specific categories" (Child abuse statistics 1). While 16.6% of the child abuse victims may have a physically representation of their abusive punishments, the other 83.4% may not. One must educate themselves to be able to search for the signs to decrease the chances of a fatal result. The number of child abuse cases have been rising over the years, from 1999 to 2005 the number of child abuse cases went from 829,000 to 890,000. With this knowledge, one can see that the tragic child abuse cases are not going away, they are in fact rising, and without people educating themselves to understand the complex situations children must face, this problem will only continue rising. In Oedipus Rex Oedipus lives a life full of riches until one day he finds out some tragic news, his whole life was a lie. Oedipus had let the shadow of ignorance consume him, and blind him from the power of knowledge, but in the end he seeks the power of enlightenment and does the right thing (Sophocles 22). Through Oedipus' journey he teaches the audience that finding out the truth, and taking action is much more fufilling than living a lie because one is simply ignorant. The igorance that is shown by people who are uneducated about child abuse, and Oedipus, are one of the main reasons that this issue is still rising. "If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed" said Thomas Jefferson, depicting that one must not be ignorant, it is Americas responsiblity as a whole to be educated and informed on series issues, such as child abuse (Jefferson 1).
